Editing text is not so easy on a smartphone. If you’ve ever watched presentations of new software features from Apple and Google, you might remember the times when text-editing features were mentioned, and the audience applauds fervently. Well, that’s because, on a smartphone screen, any keyboard improvement is always welcome!

Some tricks can be beneficial, depending on the size of the screen and even the fingers of the person typing on the smartphone. And one of the magic tricks that has helped me optimize writing articles on an iPhone is to use the keyboard as a trackpad. So this is our tutorial of the day, and as I said above, if you have a Galaxy smartphone, you can also use your keyboard as a trackpad.

How to turn the iPhone keyboard into a trackpad

The only prerequisite here is to use the default Apple keyboard. So when you open an app that lets you enter and edit text, you can turn the smartphone keyboard into a trackpad. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Open iPhone Keyboard
  2. Long press spacebar
  3. Wait for the letters to disappear.
  4. Move your finger on the keyboard to position the cursor at the desired editing point.
  5. That’s it!

And, of course, this isn’t an iOS-exclusive feature, as manufacturers like Samsung offer the same functionality. As with the iPhone, you will need to use the Samsung keyboard. No mystery, follow pretty much the same steps:

  1. Open the Samsung keyboard.
  2. Long press spacebar
  3. Wait for the “cursor control” symbol to appear on the screen.
  4. Move your finger on the keyboard to position the cursor at the desired editing point
  5. That’s it!

I found the process on the iOS keyboard more accurate than on the Samsung keyboard, plus Apple offers a wider tracking field of keyboard space to move the cursor through text.

In addition to the standard iPhone and Galaxy keyboards, if you use the Google (Gboard) keyboard, you can also use the space key as a trackpad. However, the movement is quite limited since it is only possible to move the cursor from right to left on the same line.

So, did you know this trick? Do you learn any other intelligent phone keyboard tricks? Let’s discuss it in the comments!
